BASQUE AMONG THE WORLD’S LANGUAGES
HOW GRAMMAR CAN SHED LIGHT ON THE ORIGIN OF BASQUE
Peter Bakker is associate professor at Aarhus University, Denmark. His research concerns languages in contact and new languages, such as pidgin, creoles and mixed languages. His publications range from the structural diversity of the world’s languages (typology), language change (historical linguistics) and connections between language and culture. He has a long time interest in Basque, and has written on Basque morphology, a mixed Basque-Romani language, Basque as an Atlantic trade language (Iceland, Canada). He is now studying the origins of Basque through its stable structures.
By comparing words, linguists can reconstruct older stages of languages, and determine whether two or more language descend from the same language. Such techniques allow us to go back at most 6000 years in time, perhaps 10,000 years with good data. After that, the signal is too weak. However, recent linguistic research suggests that some structural aspects of languages may persist much longer. In my presentation, we use these findings about stable structures to link Basque to the languages in the world – notably Southern Asia, the Americas and the southern Pacific.

STANDARD BASQUE AND BASQUE DIALECTS IN THE CURRENT SITUATION
The need for standard Basque (unified basque language) is now an indisputable fact, although at the time of its formation (1964) gave rise to bitter controversies.
Its application in various areas of daily life and the place that corresponds to the traditional dialects are, however, some of the issues that remain unresolved.
