OUR ATTIRE FOR LOUISBOURG

THE COSTUMES MADE BY MARITZULI KONPAINIA IN BIARRITZ

Claude Iruretagoyena and Jon Olazcuaga (Maritzuli Konpanina) are dancers, choreographers, researchers, designers and tailor. We benefit from their knowledge and their good job thanks to the accurate indication of Ane Albisu - another authority on the Basque traditional costume - to contact Claude.

The impact that our costumes caused the first day we took all our period clothes to the Fortress was epic. They loved the esthetic and the details in each and everyone of the pieces. We were proud of them too.

Claude sent also this complementary description for the staff of Parks Canada, in order to be able to give further explanations about these Basque costumes. Since all the pieces have been made with strict rigor based on descriptions of texts and illustrations of the time from the area of Baiona and the surroundings of the coast of Lapurdi.

It is very clear that these suits clearly project an identity that everyone notices. And we know it well by our experience after attending so much visitor. Surely never before Basque costumes will have been appreciated by so many people, of the thousands of visitors that pass through the DesRoches house.
